We need to belon… Vance’s memoir, I’m really glad I went into this book knowing something about Amy Chua, or it would have been much tougher to get through. It is very US-focused (not much about identity politics elsewhere in the world) but an easy read.

Particularly fascinating, the chapters on Iraq and Afghanistan, while concise, cover an amazing amount of material.

The religious side of this "tribe apart" has been discussed at length by such journalists as Chua makes the argument that American politics (policy, journalism, activism) doesn't pay enough attention to the tribal nature in the US.
There is nothing particularly new in here (humans are tribal, the US denies this which is why we keep screwing up in our "nation-building efforts abroad," and most crucially, the US is turning more tribal), but I think her analysis is spot-on.

The book is short & pithy. Her writing simultaneously makes me feel incredibly ignorant, educated, and relieved that someone is out there who can transcend both sides of the aisle while crafting logical arguments that nobody wants to hear but everyone should. At the end of the day, she has few positive recommendations other than the hope - well founded in evidence going back more than half a century - that face to face contact between 'tribes' reduces animosity.
