For years, neighbors have rallied city officials for its redevelopment to no avail. Everything in central supply, also in the basement, was now hanging from the pipes and ductwork above. The medical office building was being gutted and assessed for structural damage. An x-ray table waits, with a lead apron casually dangling from a nearby counter, as if the next patient is about to walk in from the dressing room. Seeing it in person was overwhelming . The MCC Group is a New Orleans-based construction company that includes among its past projects Benson Tower, the buildings at 1555 and 1515 Poydras St., and buildings at most of the city’s major universities.“We’re not outside people, we’re local people,” Aamodt said. It just sits there, wearing the sad, dark brick, like it would do anything to shake such a burden. “We’re not going to cut any corners, we’re going to do everything by the book, and we’re sure we’re going to get calls from neighborhood groups and City Council members if we’re not doing something correctly.”This sounds like a positive thing not only for the neighborhood, but the entire city!Great new! Crews have already completed $1.2 million in remediation — including lead and asbestos abatement and two underground tank removals. Because developers hope to use tax credits, “the elderly living facility fits really nicely into the old bones of a hospital,” Aamodt said.Developers are working with an architect to develop actual site plans, which will be presented to the neighborhood when complete, Aamodt said.
